Hackmaster's Peanut Gallery
50MB (zipped) - The vast majority of these sounds were compiled by the late Larry "Hackmaster" Schwartz for use within the editable soundscript feature found within the Links series of PC golf games from 2000 onward. My intention is to honor Larry's memory, and the best way to do that would be to ensure that his labors of love live on. Cybergolf lost a pioneer and a visionary when Larry lost his battle with cancer in 2004. By rendering a portion of his work useable within the TW series, it is my sincere hope that Larry's legacy gains a new vitality by finding a whole new audience. Also, I would hope that the ability for end-users to more easily edit in-game sounds within the TW game would become a feature in the franchise's future editions (EA/HGS, please take note).

Larry's own production notes are found at heymartin.com, which is THE Internet source for Links soundscripts. It is only fitting that Martin become known as the premiere purveyor of such sounds for all of cybergolf, and I am deeply appreciative of his willingness to host this file collection on his site. As for my contribution, I converted the .wav files to .mp3, perhaps doing a little volume adjustment here & there. The real exhaustive part was combing through the stock Feherty/McCord commentary in TW06 and re-naming the .mp3's to allow the TW game to replay them in the proper context within the game. As this work is very tedious, the door has been left open for others to pick up the ball and run with it further. Certainly there has been no shortage of new comic material since late 2002, when Larry unleashed his meisterwerk upon the world. I took the liberty of dropping in a sound or two from Napoleon Dynamite, but there are plenty of other as-yet-untapped resources out there, should someone wish to continue developing alternative commentary for either PC golf game.

Installation is rather easy: Go to your C:\Program Files\EA Sports\Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06\Sounds\Commentary folder, or the corresponding folder if you do not have a typical "C-drive" installation of the TW game. You may want to re-name the Commentary folder to "STOCKcommentary" as a first move. This way, if you do not enjoy the Hackmaster's Peanut Gallery sounds, you'll have an easy time restoring the original sounds to your game. This is strictly a voluntary step, but one that I feel is necessary to illustrate. Extract the contents of the "Commentary".zip file to C:\Program Files\EA Sports\Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06\Sounds\Commentary (telling Windows "yes to all" file replacements), and you are ready to enjoy. IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not replace the stock Commentary folder with the one from the .zip file, or your TW game experience will be mostly comment-free!! My application of the alternative commentary is only for in-flight and post-shot commentary; I left pre-shot, and hole, direction, gender or score-specific commentary alone. The idea is that the alternative comic sounds are a supplement to Feherty/McCord, not a replacement.

The alternate sounds are mostly reactions; think of the experience as having the wackiest, wittiest gallery following you around the course as you play (thus the name that I have given this file collection). In testing the alternate sounds in game-play, my experience has been about 2-dozen "alt" sounds per player, per round of 18 holes, which is why I would be the first to tell you that my work is a relatively pathetic offering when compared to the experience of Hackmaster 2003 in Links. Nonetheless, there should be enough in the way of sounds previously unheard in TW game-play that should keep players entertained over the course of a few rounds. Beyond that, it is a matter of personal taste. Should there be any adventurous souls out there who wish to build upon the work of Larry and myself, for the enjoyment of the TW-playing community at large, I only ask that Larry always be mentioned as the originator, that the history and culture of golf be respected, and that any revision, modification or upgrade to our work be shared with the world in the same spirit in which I share Larry's legacy with you here.

As a bonus, I have included a GameFace image and a Windows icon for my VCGA Tour. For more information on the Tour, which has become synonymous with play-with-the-pros realism, visit http://vcga.blogspot.com . Membership in the VCGA Tour EASO Club is open every year until the conclusion of the Masters.

Thank you for your patience; hit 'em straight and enjoy.

The entire Links community lost an icon on October 1st, 2004. Larry Schwartz, a.k.a. "Hackmaster" of the Hackmaster Soundscript fame passed away after a long fight against Cancer. May this script remain forever as a tribute to a man who was loved, honored and respected by many.
